Appel to Wou-Ki: International Art Flexes its Strength
at Heffel’s October Online Auction
William Scott ~ Still Life with Jug Thursday afternoon brought a flurry of energized bidding that resulted in an exciting close to Heffel’s October online auction of International art. Heffel is proud to announce that the sale totalled $647,000 (all prices are in Canadian dollars and include a 17% Buyer’s Premium) after both sessions extended into overtime (as per online regulations) due to significant international interest, spirited competition and above all, the high quality of the consignments. “The global reach of our International online sale is astounding - we have collectors competing from around the world, bidding aggressively via our online platform from home, office, over their mobile phone and in multiple time zones. Collectors are increasingly confident in making major, important acquisitions online through Heffel,” states Alison Meredith, Director of Consignments. The first session of International Prints and Photography started the sale off strongly, resulting in a success rate of 91%. The session was highlighted by the exceptional Liz (F. & S. II.7) by Andy Warhol, which sold for $55,575, followed by Roy Lichtenstein’s Peace Through Chemistry II, which sold for $38,025. Two strong lithographs by Otto Mueller soared above their pre-sale estimates, with Paar am Tisch selling for $32,175 and Mädchen auf dem Kanapee realizing $15,210. Works by Zau Wou-Ki once again showed their strength, with two fine lithographs, Les voiliers and Montagnes et soleil selling at above their estimates for a combined total of $21,645. Zau Wou-Ki currently holds the record for the highest price for a work of art sold through an online auction by Heffel, after his stunning 5.11.62 realized $718,750 in 2007. The second session of Fine International art was headlined by the exceptional Still Life with Jug by William Scott, which realized an impressive $152,100, greatly surpassing the pre-sale estimate of $40,000 – 60,000. Heffel continued to prove its ability to sell works by Sayed Haider Raza, with the stunning Corse selling for $64,350. Among other notable results were Larry Poon’s dramatic 28-A, which sold for $40,950 and Henry Moore’s bronze Relief: Seated Mother and Child, which realized $22,230. Heffel’s upcoming auction fall live auction is on November 28, 2013 at the Park Hyatt in Toronto, preceded by previews in Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto. Following the live auction, the November online auction will close on November 30, 2013.
