WHAT IS CYCLOPHOSPHAMIDE?
Cyclophosphamide is a drug in a class of chemotherapymedications called alkylating agents which are used to treat varioustypes of cancer. It may also be referred to as Cytoxan®.
HOW DOES CYCLOPHOSPHAMIDE WORK?
Cyclophosphamide prevents the growth and multiplication ofcancer cells, ultimately leading to cell death.
HOW IS CYCLOPHOSPHAMIDE ADMINISTERED?
Cyclophosphamide can be delivered intravenously or with a tabletby mouth. The exact way that this drug will be prescribed willdepend on your body size, type of cancer, and how you respond tothe therapy. In general, the drug will be delivered for a number ofconsecutive days followed by a period of rest.
WHAT PRECAUTIONS SHOULD I TAKE
WHILE I AM ON CYCLOPHOSPHAMIDE?

Notify your nurse or doctor if you run a fever of more than 100.5°.
Avoid contact with anyone who is ill and may be contagious.
Consult your physician before you begin taking any newover-the-counter medications, vitamins or herbal supplements.
Wear sunscreen, and prevent prolonged sun exposure.
Ask for approval from your physician prior to receiving any vaccinations.
Get lots of rest, and eat a balanced diet.
If you are on oral cyclophosphamide and miss a dose, please consult your physician. Do not take two tablets at once. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS ASSOCIATED
WITH CYCLOPHOSPHAMIDE?

Because cyclophosphamide is unable to differentiate cancer cells fromother rapidly dividing cells, there may be side effects associated withthe treatment. Keep in mind that your physician has prescribed thismedication for you because the benefits of the drug are felt to outweighthe risks. Not all patients experience all side effects, most side effectsare predictable and manageable, and they are almost always reversible.

ABOUT CYCLOPHOSPHAMIDE?

While you are taking cyclophosphamide, be certain to drink plentyof fluids for the first 24 hours following your treatment toencourage frequent urination (approximately every 2 hours). Cyclophosphamide may cause sterility in patients of both genders.
This side effect is often reversible but may persist in some patients. * For more information on these side effects, please refer to "What to Expect with Chemotherapy”.
