WARM weather has arrived, together with the risk ofleishmaniasis. The parasitic infection is no morelimited to the traditionally endemic coast areas suchas Apulia, Sicily or Sardinia: in the past years thedisease spread in the hinterland and north areas. Climate change has increased temperatures in theinland parts of Liguria, Lombardy and Tuscany. FREE APP. MSD Animal Health developed the papermap and the free app for iPhone and iPad: owners canbe informed on the infectious areas real time. The knowledge of the infectious risk of the disease,caused by the bite of an insect (sandfly), is necessaryfor an effective prevention: this is why most of Italianspecialized shops were involved the preventionproject, through a precious tool dedicated to dogowners. Specialized shops have received the handy Scalibor®Map: on the map, areas where leishmaniasis endemicpresence has been detected are highlighted in rose. The free distribution of the map is an important step tostimulate the awareness of dog owners towards aserious disease for dogs: it can be avoided thanks to aspecific product against the bite of sandflies.
